Anniversary of Wealth of Nations and Lasting Legacy of Adam Smith

This past Saturday was the anniversary of the publication of Wealth of Nations. There is perhaps no other work that has made a greater contribution towards the development of free market economics.
Having recently concluded the 300th year since Adam Smith’s birth, now is an opportune time to consider the lasting legacy of Adam Smith and his Wealth of Nations. Here is a selection of pieces from scholars in the Smith Soc orbit related to this topic.
- Glenn Hubbard joins Tano Santos for a discussion of the contributions of Adam Smith and thoughts for business leaders.
- Cato Institute scholar Ian Vasquez argues that “300 Years Later, Adam Smith Is Still Indispensable.”
- Adam Smith scholar Maria Paganelli explains how Smith’s economic vision improves not only efficiency but also the level of equality, opportunity for all, and respect for human dignity.
- Ryan T. Hanley discusses how Adam Smith’s deeply realist worldview endorses both national defense and free trade.
- Richard M. Ebeling of the Future for Freedom Foundation provides a helpful overview of Adam Smith’s economic thought.
- In an article celebrating Adam Smith, author Rainer Zitelmann contends that the only hope the poor have of bettering their condition is a market economy.
- National Review published a cache of articles in their series: Adam Smith 300.
